Will I have any free time during the cruise?
Yes, generally there is an included shore excursion in the morning which most people choose to take. But of course, if sleeping in or quietly reading on the sundeck is your preference, feel free to do that! Often the afternoons are free to explore on your own or purchase one of our optional tours. There are also activities and entertainment on board—-but you can participate or not. This is your vacation—- do as much or as little as you please. If you want more time in the city of embarkation or disembarkation, please talk to our reservation staff about adding a pre-night or post night hotel.
Are there any luggage restrictions?
Airlines are the most restrictive regarding luggage. Please call your specific international carrier about their policy. As a general rule of thumb, keep your check in luggage under 44 lbs if you have any foreign domestic flights. Also it is easier to travel with only one carry on and one check in piece of luggage. Remember that all our cruises and tours are informal, so you don’t need a lot of outfits or any fancy dress up clothes.
What about exchanging money into the local currency?
It is best to get foreign currency before your trip, at the airport upon arrival, or from the hotel (when the program includes a pre-cruise hotel night). Sometimes you may get a slightly better exchange rate at a bank, but it is it not worth the inconvenient of finding a bank and wasting precious sightseeing time standing in line. Also keep in mind that smaller ports may not readily have a bank available or an ATM machine that accepts US cards. Bring cash (in small denominations) as it is useful for tipping, and in many places you will be able use US dollars. Major credit cards are accepted in larger stores.
Will I have internet access?
At the present the only ship having internet access is the Victoria Empress on our China program. For all other destinations, internet cafes during a port stop are your best bet. Your Tour Director may be able to direct you.
What about tipping, what about drinking the water, what should I wear?
Please see the individual “Travel Tips” guide for your specific destination. All these questions and many more are answered in detailed information pertaining to the country or region you will be visiting.
Who is Value World Tours, Inc.?
Value World Tours, Inc. is a wholesale tour and cruise operator established in December of 1992 with the goal of promoting two things; the emerging destinations of Russia, China and Eastern Europe who were just starting to open up their borders after decades of Communist rule, and second, promoting a “new” mode of exploring the world by utilizing small river cruise vessels to traverse inland waterways of various countries visited. At the time, while river cruising was a popular weekend retreat for Europeans, it was barely known or promoted in North America. We can proudly say that we were truly one of the first companies in the US to offer cruises along the Volga (1993), Ukraine (1994), Europe Danube (1995), China Yangtze (1996) and Kwai and Mekong in 2004.
